The announcement from Rushi Sunak on 8th July 2020, sounded fantastic for Green Energy, and improving the cost of energy to the climate.
The offer of a voucher, to the value of £5000 for all homeowners looking to replace their boiler, or improve their insulation or replace double glazing, all intended as a means to boost the economy and reduce unemployment looked good as a headline, in that five minute scramble before the government briefing. Fabulous!
So many homeowners now thinking yes - I can do that if I will get a voucher.
That is until you take a little look under the bonnet.
The truth is this is a scheme that needs far more consideration.
There are lots of questions that remain at large, how will it be regulated, who will check the installations, what are the criteria, will it be means tested, will it depend on the age of your property, will it cover works that have been done recently?
This will not be clear until the scheme goes live in September.
We have taken a look at several opinions on this and the common line of thought is that this will lead to ill considered installations, may cause more problems to property in the long run than necessary, and doesn't actually reduce the running costs for heating homes.
We would suggest that you use your architect to their full potential when planning any extension or renovation.
We are trained to review the existing fabric of the building and ascertain where your money will be best spent in years to come working with energy assessors, and using detailed calculations to work out heat loss and thermal improvements.
With the right information you will then be able to consider the quality of installation, the requirements to meet or exceed current building regulations and better understand what you are buying into.
We will review the information issued by the government and be in contact with those clients who may benefit in the next few weeks. Please ask us if you require further information in relation to your scheme.
